Portugal is one of the most popular relocation destinations in Europe, and the choice usually comes down to two cities: Lisbon, the cosmopolitan capital, and Porto, its smaller, cheaper and increasingly beloved rival. Both are wonderful. They are genuinely different places to live, and the right answer depends on what you want from daily life.

Lisbon: the cosmopolitan capital

Strengths: an international airport with direct flights across the world, a large and established expat and startup community, beaches within reach at Cascais and Estoril, and more English spoken day to day. Trade-offs: higher rents, more tourists, and a tighter, more competitive housing market.

Typical two-bedroom: roughly €1,400–2,200/month in central areas such as Príncipe Real, Avenidas Novas, Arroios and Alcântara.

Porto: the rising star

Strengths: noticeably cheaper, genuinely beautiful along the Douro, a strong sense of community, and a superb food and wine culture. Trade-offs: fewer direct long-haul flights, a smaller (though fast-growing) international scene, and wetter winters.

Typical two-bedroom: roughly €900–1,400/month in central areas such as Bonfim, Cedofeita and Baixa.

Cost of living beyond rent

Day-to-day costs — groceries, eating out, transport — are similar between the two, with Porto a little cheaper overall. The biggest single difference is housing, where Porto can save you several hundred euros a month on a comparable flat. Both cities are far more affordable than London, Paris or Amsterdam.

Remote work and community

Lisbon has the larger coworking scene, more networking events and a bigger pool of fellow expats, which matters if your social life and work both depend on meeting people quickly. Porto is catching up fast and many remote workers prefer its slower, more livable pace.

💡 Whichever you choose, Portuguese law since 2021 limits blanket pet bans, deposits are typically one to two months, and a long-term lease gives you solid tenant protection — confirm you are signing a residential contract, not a short-stay one.

The verdict

Choose Lisbon if you need global flight connections, a large ready-made community and the busier, more international feel of a capital. Choose Porto for a higher quality of life at a lower cost, with real charm and a tighter community — as long as you do not need to fly long-haul every month.

Frequently asked questions

Is Porto cheaper than Lisbon?

Yes, especially on rent — a comparable central two-bedroom is often several hundred euros a month less in Porto. Everyday costs are similar, with Porto slightly lower overall.

Which city is better for remote workers?

Lisbon has the bigger coworking and networking scene and more English spoken; Porto offers a calmer pace and better value and is growing quickly as a remote-work base.

Do I need a Portuguese guarantor to rent?

Not always, but some landlords ask for one or for several months’ rent in advance. If you have no local guarantor, extra deposit or a guarantor service can bridge the gap.
